Akwesasne Mohawk Casino hosting 13th Ironworkers Festival

 AKWESASNE -- The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino will host the 13th Ironworkers Festival, with games, music, food and more on July 25.

The event brings ironworkers from around the northeast U.S. and Canada to compete in events including rod tying, spud throw, bolt toss, beam walk, column climb and more.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. at the casino.

The opening ceremony at 10 a.m. will include remarks from chiefs Ron LaFrance and Beverly Cook, retired ironworker Billy Sears and Ironworkers Local 440 officials Tom “Gulla” Thomas and Mike Swamp. It will also include a roll call of ironworkers who have died.

Events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. include rod tying, spud throw, bolt toss, knot tying, rivet exhibition, beam walk, column climb, women’s packing, watermelon eating contest and a chicken wing cook-off.

Goldwing Express, a Native American country band from Branson, Ms. will play from noon to 3 p.m.

Awards and closing ceremonies are slated for 5 p.m. This year will also include an Ultimate Referee Champ award.
