ADK Club Laurentian Chapter hosting hikes in Potsdam, Colton, Piercefield and beyond

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will host several upcoming events.

On Thursday, Jan. 1, a potluck party at Clarkson's Adirondack Lodge. No cooking facilities, so hors d’oeuvres and items that don’t require cooking or heating are standard. There will be short, easy walking, snowshoeing, or skiing tours on scenic trails of the campus. Outdoor activities start about 2 p.m. Snacks will be served at 4 p.m. Contact Tom Wheeler 386-2482

Cross country skiing for beginners will be held Saturday, Jan. 3. The event takes place at Higley Flow State Park, on roads that become ski trails in winter. Experienced skiers who'd like a short easy ski are welcome. Meet at Warm new Lodge for putting on ski boots. There will be an optional lunch at South of the Rock Inn. Snowshoe at Stone Valley on Saturday, Jan. 10. Participants will start at the north end of the valley and snowshoe up to Colton and then back. Mid-morning start, bring a lunch. The trip is 7 miles with some steep spots. Moderate difficulty. Contact Tom Ortmeyer at 265-8219 or tortmeye@gmail.com for info.

Part 1 of the Saranac 6er Series is slated for Sunday, Jan. 11. Hike McKenzie and Haystack. The group will climb McKenzie first, then Haystack from the Jack Rabbit Trail, totaling about 12 miles. The hike is very strenuous. Contact Felicia Neahr at felicia.neahr@gmail.com for info.

Part 2 of the Saranac 6er Series will take place Monday, Jan 12. Hike St. Regis and Baker. St. Regis first, then break for lunch followed by Baker. St. Regis could be done as a stand-alone hike. St. Regis is about 6.6 miles and Baker is about 1.8 miles. The hike is strenuous. Info: Felicia at felicia.neahr@gmail.com

The Grassy Pond ski/snowshoe outing is planned for Saturday, Jan. 24. The outing is a four-mile ski or snowshoe near Paul Smiths on an old truck trail that crosses the Osgood River and then rises to a lean-to above Grassy Pond. Lunch will be served at the hut. Ski to the old state game farm off the Loon Lake Road with an optional snowshoe to Debar Pond on Saturday, Jan 31. The length is about 2-5 miles depending on options and provides several good mountain views. The difficulty is easy. Contact Duncan Cutter at 328-4675 or dcutter1@twcny.rr.com for more info.

A snowshoe/hike in Stone Valley is set for Saturday, Feb. 7. Participants will meet on Lenny Road at the Colton end. The outing is 2-3 miles and is moderate in difficulty with some hills to climb. Info: Jim Akins at 386-4348 or akinsacres@gmail.com

Part 3 of the Saranac 6er Series is planned on Saturday, Feb. 7. Hike Scarface and Ampersand. Scarface first, then break for lunch, then Ampersand to end the series with beautiful 360 views. Scarface could be done as a stand-alone hike. Scarface is about 6.8 miles and Ampersand is about 5.4 miles. Very strenuous. Contact Felicia Neahr felicia.neahr@gmail.com for info.

Snowshoeing near Gananoque, Ontario on Saturday, Feb. 14. The length is 7-miles, minimal height gain but many ups and downs. Moderate. Possible supper at the Stonewater Pub. Contact John Barron at 613-828-2296 or johnbarron@sympatico.ca to register.

Snowshoe St. Regis Mt. Saturday, Feb. 28. The trip is 6.6 miles round trip with a 1,200 foot vertical rise. The difficulty is moderate. There is a fire tower and 360 degree views. Snowshoe at Five Ponds Wilderness on Leary Trail Sunday, March 1. Abandoned after the 1995 windstorm, this trail is again navigable. The trail is about 10 miles round-trip and is mostly gentle terrain. Depending on conditions we may return via High Falls or press deeper into Five Ponds. Very strenuous. Snowshoe Haystack Mountain in Ray Brook Saturday, March 7. Flat snowshoeing at start, then a steep climb to the top. Snowshoes with claws/crampons required. Great views on a clear day. Snowshoe Mt. Arab Sunday, March 8, for a beautiful view for modest effort. Some steep sections but there are stairs along the way. Snowshoes with claws/crampons required. The trip is two-mile round-trip, elevation gain of 700ft. Ski to High Rock Saturday, March 14. Join for a 7.6 mile round trip on mostly easy terrain on the Oswegatchie River near Wanakena. Easy to moderate difficulty. Contact Blair Madore, 265-0602 or madorebf@potsdam.edu.

Snowshoe or hike around Massawepie Lake Saturday, March 21. The trip is approximately 6-miles with a few short climbs and descents but no significant elevation gain. We will traverse dramatic eskers, visit the source of the Grass River, and have lunch on one of the peninsulas. Moderate difficulty. Snowshoe Algonquin and Wright Peaks Sunday, March 22 with 360º views from both High Peaks. There will still be enough snow at elevation to require snowshoes. Expect windy conditions. About 3,400’ elevation gain and 10 miles. Very strenuous. Contact Mark Lowell, markl@stlawu.edu, 386-3945 for info.
