'Adirondack Winter White Out Weekend' Saturday and Sunday in Clifton-Fine area packed with winter sports, music, kids' games

The “Adirondack Winter White Out Weekend” will include snowshoe and cross-country skiing, model railroads, curling, music, food, kids’ activities, historical presentations and more.

It is slated for Feb. 28 and March 1 throughout the Clifton-Fine area.

Saturday schedule:

• All day - area snowmobile trails open

• 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Student volleyball tournament, Clifton-Fine Central School, hosted by Clifton-Fine PTO.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Mobile New York State Thompson Zoo at Clifton-Fine school

• 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Crafting workshop for ages 12 and up at the Star Lake schoolhouse. Fiber and yarn shopping “meet and greet” is at 10 a.m. Groups will begin crafting at 11 a.m.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Western Adirondack model railroad exhibit at the schoolhouse.

• 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Ice bowling in front of the Pine Cone Grill in Wanakena. The restaurant’s owner is giving away an original painting by her as a door prize. The eatery will also serve a pig roast until 8 p.m. The Adirondack Toboggan Microbrewery will serve beer at the Pine Cone from noon to 6 p.m.

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Curling with the Lake Placid Curling Club in front of the Pine Cone.

• Noon to 1 p.m. - Dog sled demonstration at the Ranger School ball field in Wanakena.

• 1 to 2 p.m. - Noteworthy Hand Bell Choir concert at the Clifton-Fine school auditorium.

• 1 p.m. - “Find the Yeti” geo-caching event in front of the Ranger School. Participants will learn to use a GPS and locate a set of coordinates.

• 2 p.m. - SUNY ESF Ranger School exhibition pond hockey game. On the ice in front of the Ranger School. Free.

• 2 to 4 p.m. - Snowshoe hike to the “Big Pine.” Start in front of Ranger School. Some snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions. For safety reasons, trip leaders can ask those without proper dress to sit out.

• 2 to 4 p.m. - Peavine Swamp cross-country ski loop. Start at trailhead in front of Ranger School. Some skis are available first-come first serve. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions. For safety reasons, trip leaders can ask those without proper dress to sit out. The loop is about 6 miles.

• 2 p.m. - Fireside historian in the Ranger School lounge. Former ESF prof. Wayne Allen will tell local history stories. There will also be historical displays by the Wanakena Historical Association.

• 5:30 p.m. - Live music with Fade to Blues at Pine Cone Grill, Wanakena. They play Texas-style blues.

• 6 p.m. - “Winter Wonderland” youth ice show at Clifton-Fine Arena. Admission is free and donations for the youth figure skating club will be accepted.

• 7 to 9 p.m. - Contra dance at the Ranger School dining room. Beginners will get a walkthrough at 7 with dances starting at 7:30. Angie Oliver will be the caller and the band will be the Great South Woods String Band. The event is for ages 12 and up.

Sunday schedule:

• All day - Snowmobile trails open

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. - Cross-country ski trip on the Gilbert Tract in Cranberry Lake. Some skis are available first-come first serve. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions. For safety reasons, trip leaders can ask those without proper dress to sit out. The loop is about 6 miles. Free.

• Noon to 1 p.m. - Dog sled demonstration with Brian Heft at the Clifton Community Center in Cranberry Lake. It is past the tennis courts and playground.

• Noon to 4 p.m. - “Frozen”-themed children’s event at the Clifton Community Library. Characters Anna and Elsa from the movie will be there for photo ops with children. There will be a showing of the film with popcorn at noon. The North Country Children’s Museum will offer a “Tracks on the Frozen Ground” exhibit. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

• 1 to 2 p.m. - Adirondack Raptors at the Cranberry Lake fire hall. Owls and other birds of prey will be on display.

• 2 p.m. - Meet Smokey the Bear at the Cranberry Lake fire hall.

• 2 to 4 p.m. - Snack bar at the fire hall.

• 2 to 4 p.m. - Ice rescue demonstration at the DEC building on Riverside Road in Cranberry Lake.

• 2 to 4 p.m. - Snowshoe hike around Tooley Pond. Start point is to-be-determined. Some snowshoes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions. For safety reasons, trip leaders can ask those without proper dress to sit out.

• 3 to 6 p.m. - Free ice skating at Clifton-Fine Arena. People must bring their own skates.

• Snowshoe hike in Five Ponds Wilderness on Leary Trail. It will be about a 10-mile round trip. The hike is very strenuous and people must pre-register: markl@stlawu.edu or 386-3945.
