TUPPER LAKE -- The 2016 Adirondack Assistive Technology Expo will be held on Monday, Oct. 24 and Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake.

Sponsored by Clarkson University's Department of Occupational Therapy, the conference is intended to deliver relevant and current information on assistive technology that can promote independence and participation in meaningful activities for people of all ages.

This year's keynote presentation will be delivered by Therese Willkomm, the director of ATinNH, New Hampshire's state-wide assistive technology program, and an associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of New Hampshire.

Willkomm has overcome numerous barriers in her own personal experience with "disability." Her presentation, "Born To Create," will discuss and demonstrate her personal journey of how disability becomes the greatest asset in the creation of solutions for easier living, learning, and working. She will discuss how her experiences with dyslexia and Tourette syndrome have contributed to the development of more than 1,000 assistive technology inventions, among other topics.

This year's breakout sessions will include presentations addressing apps for assistive technology, SmartHome technologies and automation, AT for low vision, blindness and hearing impairment, Adaptive music and numerous other topics.

In addition to the conference sessions, participants will have an opportunity to visit ten exhibitor booths, discuss products and engage in hands-on AT exploration.

On Monday evening, participants are invited to an optional networking event at the Big Tupper Brewery from 5 to 8 p.m.

Advance registration is required, with an early registration discount available until October 1.

Additional conference information, session descriptions and registration information can be found by visiting at www.clarkson.edu/ot/atexpo.

Individuals with disabilities, family members or caregivers may be eligible for supplemental funding to off-set the cost of attending the conference. Financial support has also been made available to vendors or agencies who wish to be exhibitors. Those who are interested in learning more about supplemental funding should contact Lisa Tebo at ltebo@clarkson.edu.
