5th annual Alcoa Employee Food Drive 5k Run/Walk to be held in memory of Massena firefigher

MASSENA -- The 5th Annual Alcoa Employee Food Drive 5k Run/Walk will be held Oct. 11 at Robert Moses State Park’s Barnhart Beach pavilion.

This year’s event will be held in memory of Scott Billings, an Alcoa employee and Massena Volunteer Firefighter who died in February.

This annual 5k raises funds for Meals on Wheels, Massena Neighborhood Center, Society of St. Vincent DePaul and the Massena Salvation Army. Runners and walkers of all levels are encouraged to participate.

Walkers and runners who pre-register by Sept. 20 to pay the discounted rate of $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. After Sept. 20, registration is $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver in the presence of race officials. T-shirts will be given to the first 200 registered participants.

The race begins at 9 a.m. Race day registration runs from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

The course starts at the Barnhart Beach pavilion, proceeds to the marina, through the new camping area and ends back at the pavilion. Changing facilities will be available at the start and end of the race. Pets, bikes, skateboards and rollerblades are not permitted.

Awards will be handed out for top male and female overall finishers, oldest and youngest runners, and the first place and second place male and female in age groups 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over. Numerous door prizes will also be awarded by drawing, and all participants will be entered to win.

Walkers and runners are also eligible to participate in door prize and grand prize drawings. Grand prizes this year include Cape Air tickets for two to Albany and a hotel stay at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino resort hotel.

Billings, a member of United Steelworkers Local 420, worked at Alcoa from 2008 until the time of his death, working most recently in the Massena Operations Alcoa forgings and extrusion division. In addition to his membership in the Massena Fire Department, where he was a lieutenant, he was a past member of the West Potsdam and Madrid Volunteer Fire departments.
