CANTON -- The 51st Rushton Memorial Canoe Race is set for Friday May 4 to Sunday May 6.
The weekend, hosted by St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers, will include competitive and recreational canoe races on the Grasse River.
Festivities will be going on throughout the village, with restaurant specials, music and exhibits. Event coordinator Chuck Bolesh noted that “we are not looking to repeat the grand celebration of last year’s 50th race, but we do want to make sure that everyone in Canton and the surrounding area has the opportunity to enjoy the river, downtown Canton and Rushton’s heritage.”
J. Henry Rushton was a boat builder in Canton from 1843 to 1906. His canoe designs were much in demand.
Bolesh added that the traditional race from Pyrites to Canton Island Park was so successful when it was reinstituted last year that it will be held again Friday night, May 4.
