MASSENA -- Forty fire departments and 70 fire trucks will descend on Massena for this weekend’s Northern New York Volunteer Firefighters Association convention.
Tom Miller, a former Massena fire chief who is helping organize the event, says there is a full slate of events on tap.
Thursday includes a fire department golf tournament at the Massena Country Club. It will include 38 teams.
“It’s the biggest one yet,” Miller said of the yearly event, which is full.
Friday starts with a NNYVFA business meeting, where they will elect officers and pick next year’s convention host.
At 1:30 p.m., they will name the fireman of the year and hold a memorial service at Emmanuel Congregational Church, 39 West Orvis St.
The fire hall will host music in the evening and night. The Norwood Brass Firemen will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m., followed by 10 Cent Green.
The convention culminates on Saturday with a parade and firematic races.
The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. It will go from North Main Street to Bridges Avenue.
After that, the departments will compete in firematic races at the Massena Industrial Park.
“The big event!” Miller said, adding that they are expecting a very large crowd.
Races start at 1 p.m. and could go as late as 6 p.m., Miller said.

The weekend closes with a fireworks display by Majestic Fireworks at Bushnell Field.
