4-H youth outdoorsist program starts April 2 in Norfolk

NORFOLK -- The 2016 4-H Shooting Sports program, for young people interested in shooting and the conservation of natural resources, begins an eight-session program Saturday, April 2 at the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club, with subsequent classes there and at the St. Lawrence County Extension Learning Farm in Canton.

In addition to firearm safety and archery, instruction includes wildlife ecology, hunting ethics, game laws, and other outdoor skills.

The schedule:

• Saturday, April 2, 9 a.m. to noon, archery and shotgun, Norfolk Rod and Gun Club

• Thursday, April 7, 6 to 8 p.m., wildlife calls and scents and trapping, Extension Learning Farm

• Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m. to noon, air rifle, rifle, shotgun, Norfolk Rod and Gun Club

• Thursday, April 21, 6 to 8 p.m., game warden/wildlife appreciation and tracking, Extension Learning Farm

• Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m. to noon, archery, air pistol, shotgun, Norfolk Rod and Gun Club

• Saturday, May 7, 9 a.m. to noon, working with bird dogs, location TBD

• Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m. to noon, shooter's choice, Norfolk Rod and Gun Club

• Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m. to noon, shooter's choice, Norfolk Rod and Gun Club.

Youth must be 9 to 11 years of age to participate in archery and air rifle, and 12 to19 for all other disciplines. Air pistol will be available to those youth who are at least 14 years old and have successfully completed one year in the 4-H shooting sports program. Parents encouraged to get involved too.

Participants use Extension-owned archery equipment, air rifles and pistols, .22 caliber rifles, and 20 and 12 gauge shotguns.

Cost is $55 per student, which includes memberships in the Sportsman Club and 4-H, insurance, supplies (ammo and targets), and facility use.
