CANTON – The annual 4-H Shooting Sports Program gets underway in April, and they are now signing up youngsters 9 to 19 years old.
Instruction includes firearm safety, basic marksmanship, range procedures, and maintenance of firearms. Juniors, age 9 to 11, work with air rifles and archery. Seniors, age 12 to 19, will also use .22 cal. rifles and shotguns. Students will be introduced to using maps, compass, and GPS, and basic outdoor skills.
It meets at the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club and occasionally at the Extension Learning Farm in Canton. Parents are encouraged to get involved.
The $30 fee per Junior and $40 per Senior includes memberships, insurance, ammo and targets, and facility use.
Groups will meet:
• Friday, April 8, 6-8 p.m.
• Friday, April 15, 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m.
• Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m.-noon
• Friday, April 22, 6-8 p.m.
• Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m.-noon
• Friday, May 6, 6-8 p.m.
• Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m.-noon
• Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.-noon.
Interested people can call Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County at 379-9192 to register. Registration forms will be mailed, which can be returned with fees.
