CANTON -- The 33rd Holiday of Lights celebration will welcome in the holiday season Friday, Nov. 25, with a visit from Santa Claus, free sleigh rides, a tree lighting, and music.

A team of four Percheron horses, owned by Tim Hatch, will usher Santa to the village green around 6 p.m. to light a memorial tree. Santa will be escorted by firefighters to Village Green.

Santa and the mayor will lead the countdown to the lighting of the tree, said event organizer Marilyn Mintener.

Children’s characters will mingle with children and families, including, Rudolph, Frost and Honey Bear.

“Last year we had about 300 kids,” she said.

The fire department’s Dalmatian mascot will be also be there, Mintener said.

Santa will gift each child with a book and candy cane.

Diane Foote will lead caroling with there will be music.

The Presbyterian Church, Park Place, will serve hot chocolate and cookies and free wagon rides around the village will be offered.

Hundreds of children and their families generally enjoy the sleigh rides.

There is also a memory tree and donations benefit the Holiday of Lights. The cost is $2 per name. Memory tree donations can be made with at 379-1631 with Joyce.

The event began in 1984 after a committee formed with the goal of decorating the village for the holiday. Lighted wreaths and Christmas lights will be stringed along Main Street.

“This event has grown every year and we thank the merchants for covering the expenses,” Mintener said.
