POTSDAM — The family of Robert Plumb, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and The Clarkson Inn invite the community to the 30th anniversary of “Light up a Life.”

The Robert Plumb Memorial Tree is located next to the Clarkson Inn by the river and will be lit on Thursday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.

A reception including refreshments and holiday songs performed by the Sweet Adeline’s will follow at the Clarkson Inn.

In 1985, the Potsdam Chamber and the family of Robert Plumb planted a tree next to the Clarkson Inn as a living symbol to memorialize the talented local artist.

That December, the tree was wrapped in all white holiday lights except for three distinct blue bubs at the top of the tree honoring his grandchildren.

In 1986 Sister Kathryn, the first executive director of Hospice approached the family about using the tree as a way for the community to gather and enjoy the company of friends, neighbors and loved ones and also to remember those who are no longer with us.

The Plumb family agreed and the Robert Plumb Memorial ”Light up a Life” Tree lighting became a long- standing community tradition. Now, thirty years later, there are fifteen blue light bulbs as the Plumb family has grown to include spouses of grandchildren and their children.

“He would have been so pleased with all the grandchildren,” said his daughter Cheryl Ellis.
