21st Annual Madrid Canoe Regatta pro and amateur races June 9 and 10

MADRID – St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers host the 21st annual Madrid Canoe Regatta and St. Lawrence County Flatwater Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, on the Grasse River at Madrid Municipal Park, Rt. 345.

C-1, C-2, Amateur Marathon (9 mile), C-2 Pro, and recreational races will be featured.

An amateur marathon race, for single-place kayaks and one- and two-place canoes, runs for nine miles with one portage, starting at 11:30 Saturday.

A three-mile recreation race for several classes of craft starts at 11:45.

Also scheduled Saturday are a nine-mile C-2 pro race, and the Madrid Mile, a C-1 sprint with cash prizes/

The annual spaghetti dinner will top off the days activities.

Sunday’s racing starts at 10 a.m. with pro events for C-2 (two-place canoe) and K-1 (single-place kayak) with cash prizes for the best times over the 16-mile course with one portage.

Also setting off at 10 a.m. are C-1, K-1 and C-2 amateur marathon contenders taking a 13-mile course with one portage.

A six-mile recreation race starts at 10:30 for several classes of canoes and kayaks, including several divisions of tandem canoe racers.

Mail-in pre-registration for either day will be accepted if received by June 2. The entry form can be found at http://slvpaddlers.org/images/madrid/2012madridrec.pdf. Entries can be mailed to Madrid Canoe Regatta, 3301 CR 14, Madrid NY 13660.

Entry fees per paddler are: high school, $5; adults $20; military and veterans $15; professionals $30. St. Lawrence Valley paddlers members can take $5 off the price, except the high school fee. Those who enter a second race will pay $10 per paddler.

Rough camping facilities and a playground are available at the community center and park.

All participants receive a race T-shirt. Race fees vary by category.

A dinner and awards ceremony will be held on Sunday.
