CANTON – Plans are underway to stage a Canton Chautauqua in July in honor of the first Chautauqua held here on July 17-21, 1919.
Chautauqua was an adult education and art movement in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, until the 1920s. The events, festivals of a kind, featured art, music, poetry, oratory and cultural activities in rural towns across the country.
The 2019 Canton Chautauqua, held 100 years after the first, will take place at Canton Island Park Thursday, July 18 from 5-9 p.m.; Friday, July 19 from noon-9 p.m.; and Saturday, July 20 from noon-9 p.m.
There will be events and activities for all ages, said Village Trustee Sean O’Brien, one of the events organizers. Music, nature activities, storytelling, and the Mysterious “Nerd” Tent will be part of the festivities.
Wine tastings, tai chi, yoga, folk dancing, spoken word, poetry and birdspotting are also planned.
There will be a Feature Tent hosting regular “How to Start a Band” workshops to get young musicians and roadies on their way to performing live music.
A live music performance line-up includes concerts by The Waydown Wailers, Odis, Rob Larrabee, Bill Vitek, Maxwell Howard, and members of Uprooted.
Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs and blankets; glass bottles however will not be permitted.
