MASSENA -- Sounds and sights of the Civil War will fill the air this summer at the 11th Annual Civil War Reenactment Weekend at Robert Moses State Park, Massena, Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29, sponsored by SeaComm Federal Credit Union. The Civil War Reenactment Weekend is part of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which began in 1861. In addition to SeaComm Federal Credit Union, other sponsors include Gene and Connie Barto, Niles Asset Management and Stewart’s Shops.
The tentative schedule for Civil War Reenactment Weekend (subject to change) is:

10:30 a.m. Rules of Etiquette for Ladies and Gentlemen
Ongoing Drilling, Scenarios, Kid’s Activities, Historical displays
Ongoing Firing Demonstrations & “Hands-on” Museum
Ongoing 20 min. presentations on a variety of topics
1:30 pm Fashion Show – The Many Layers of a 19th Century Woman
2 p.m. Basket Auction - At the pavilion
3 p.m. Battle
5:30 p.m. Pig Roast - At the pavilion
11 p.m. Camps Quiet
Sunday, July 29
10 a.m. Camps Open to the Public

The St. Lawrence County Historical Association presents the weekend, which is hosted by the Second Michigan, Co. E Reenactment Unit. Admission is $4 per person per day, free for children 6 and under. The maximum you will pay, no matter how many passengers are in a vehicle, is $15. Trunks will not be checked for Confederate spies. The military camps are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Mock battles will be at 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Closing ceremonies will follow the Sunday battle. The Marine Corps League, St. Lawrence County Detachment 408 provides a food concession both days.
Reenactors from New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ontario and Quebec, Canada, are expected to attend, including, President Lincoln, several generals, and sutlers (vendors of period goods and clothing).
The SLCHA Gift Shop is a great way to take some Civil War history home with books like Young Heroes of the Civil War, Gallantry in the Field: Potsdam and the Civil War, and the graphic novel Free At Last: How the Freeing of the Slaves Changed American History.
The St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House is open Tuesday through Saturday noon to 4 p.m., Friday noon to 8 p.m. Admission to the museum is free; admission to the archives is free for members and children, $2.50 for college students, and $5 for the general public. The St. Lawrence County Historical Association is located at 3 E. Main St., Canton. Parking is available in the back of the SLCHA, next to the museum’s main entrance.
