MASSENA -- The village has signed a two-year deal with the Massena Fire Department to pay $28,700 per year.
The total price tag is $82,000. The town will pick up the rest.
From the village portion, $15,000 will go into an equipment fund to buy new turnout gear. It has a 10-year shelf life, after which it must be destroyed and replaced.
Fire Chief Tom Miller said firefighters exposed to the greatest hazard -- those who go into burning buildings -- will get the new gear and the older gear will be passed to those who do less-risky tasks.
“We were alarmed at the shape of the turnout gear for interior firefighters,” Miller said.
