CANTON -- Following in the footsteps of Potsdam’s “First Saturday” program which brings college students and local businesses together, the Village of Canton will host its version this year with “The Stomp.”
“Getting students and businesses together has been a part of the community action plan for awhile now,” said Village Economic Developer Leigh Rodriguez.
The first annual “The Stomp” was coordinated by the Canton Chamber of Commerce, Village Office of Economic Development, Canton Merchants’ Association, in cooperation with St. Lawrence University and SUNY Canton.
“The program is really for freshmen…but all students are invited,” according to Canton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sally Hill.
Around 25 businesses have signed up so far to be a part of the event. Businesses signed up include Glow Skincare, Gamer Craze, White’s Flowers, Price Chopper, Nature Storehouse and Dairy Queen.
“In the past I would hear about seniors who have been here four years and didn't know about businesses that were here the whole time they were in college,” Hill said.
Bus transportation will be provided so students do not have to walk to each location. Buses will take students from campus to the Village Green and outer Main Street areas for easier participation.
There will be student musicians, bands and an improv comedy show at the Village Green from 1 until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Improv group, “Completely Stranded,” from Plattsburgh will put on a free show for the public to watch.
Businesses will offer discounts, there will be games in the park and students can win prizes including gift certificates which can be redeemed at many downtown businesses. Glow Skincare will offer complimentary five-minute hydro massages and Gamer Craze is offering 35 percent off merchandize
“Each business will have something to do…and the kids can get their passports signed so that we know they’ve visited the business,” Hill said.
The first 100 students to return their completed stamped passports will receive a free t-shirt.
“The goal is to better acquaint students with businesses in the community so students know about all of the great services and businesses right here in the village,” Rodriquez said.
