MASSENA -- The Town of Massena will spend $3,400 on a fishing and tourism promotion website.

The town has contracted with Jason Hendricks of H3 Design “to build and promote a website specifically designed to showcase the world-class freshwater sport fishing available here,” Town Supervisor Joe Gray said.

After a June 29 executive session, the town board voted unanimously to Hendricks of H3 Designs “to create the site, maximize accessibility through Internet Search engines and begin assembling a Massena presence on social media outlets such as Facebook, YouTube and Instagram,” Gray said.

Hendricks will be paid the $3,400 out of the fishing and tourism promotion line in the town budget for the website design.

The site will be used to expose internet traffic to Massena and the surrounding area, the different species of fish available, the importance of catch and release fishing, local facilities and businesses such as boat ramps, hotels, motels, campgrounds, etc., Gray said.

The site will also feature a number of fishing videos produced over the past year by Don Meissner, the town’s sport fishing promoter. Meissner is a well-known host of the long-running PBS series “Streamside” and is the host and producer of the new WPBS series “Fishing Behind the Lines.”

Hendricks and Meissner will also work together to capitalize on social media outlets to create a broader online presence for Massena and the fishing opportunities available in the St. Lawrence, Grasse and Raquette rivers.

“This is effort is part of a multi-pronged economic development effort by the Massena Town Council to help stimulate the local economy,” Gray said. “It is designed to dovetail with both the Grasse and Raquette River Blueway corridors by bringing greater attention to Massena’s waterways and the multiple recreational activities available here.”

The Town Council will continue working with the Massena Business Development Corporation for Greater Massena and the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce to develop more business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, according to the supervisor.
