A total of 17 St. Lawrence County elected officials are publicly supporting Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to cut local property taxes.

The first proposition is a two-year property tax freeze. Residents would be eligible if their local government stays within the cap, the release reads. The relief would continue into the second year, if along with staying within the limit, "pursue concrete steps to consolidate, share services, and ultimately reduce costs," according to the statement.

The measure will create an average tax break of $354 for up to 2.8 million taxpayers and create up to $1 billion in tax relief for local governments and school districts, according to the governor’s office.

The second measure, a so-called "circuit breaker proposal," would form a "progressively distributed tax credit in order to provide relief based on an individual homeowner’s ability to pay."

In a prepared statement, officials said this is because as many as 2 million low- and middle-income families pay a property tax rate that exceeds their income tax rate. The statement says that demographic could see an average benefit of $500.

The St. Lawrence County officials that support the measures include:
