POTSDAM -- Today’s Hair and Day Spa is the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Business of the Year.

The award will be presented to owner Shelly Murray at the chamber’s spring luncheon, which starts at noon May 14 at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.

Today’s Hair and Day Spa is a full-service salon that has been serving Potsdam for 17 years. The business moved to 36 Market St., a convenient location with high visibility, in 2010. The business has doubled the number of its employees and added services. The spa space was opened in 2011, offering spa packages for bridal parties, birthday parties, and other groups.

They also offer the services you would expect: haircuts, hair color, manicures and pedicures, facials, ear piercing, massage and more.

“Today’s Hair has a team of stylists and cosmetologists with a passion for their work,” said the Potsdam Chamber’s announcement.

Murray has over 27 years of cosmetology experience. She is a graduate of SMT School of Cosmetology and is licensed in cosmetology, Keratin Complex, Smoothing Therapy, and many more beauty services. According to owner Murray on the business’s website, “I have a great passion for this industry and have been blessed with loving to come to work every day. I have continued to be inspired by this industry which therefore inspires me to want to grow and learn even more.”

As one nominator observed, “Her customer service is exceptional…Shelly and her staff go above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate her customers’ needs.”

As for community enhancement, “I can think of no one else who has offered more without an expectation of public recognition,” that person said.

Today’s Hair has hosted many open houses and fundraising activities. For several years, they have offered Cuts for a Cause, which donates all profits to worthy causes such as Joanne’s Gift of Love, our local humane society, and Hospice. The “Go Pink” Breast Cancer campaign raised $3,500 for the Canton Potsdam Hospital Cancer Navigation program.

Dozens of local fundraisers and jamborees have benefited from Murray’s generosity, the announcement said. She has also participated in chamber-sponsored events such as Fright Night, Summer Festival, and the Holiday Window Display Contest.

A final observation by a nominator was that “We should be proud to call them one of our own.”

Reservations for the luncheon can be made by contacting the Potsdam Chamber at 274-9000 or potsdam@slic.com. Cost of lunch is $20.
