CANTON — St. Lawrence University’s Board of Trustees approved a 3.5 percent tuition hike for the 2017-18 school year.

The board voted to establish the 2017-18 price tag at $66,646, which is an increase of $2,256 over last year. This reflects a 3.5 percent difference for university tuition, room, board and fees, which is about the same rate of increase as the last two years.

“St. Lawrence University provides exceptional experiences that support exceptional outcomes,” President William L. Fox said. “We recognize the investments, both financial and emotional, by our St. Lawrence families and friends that enable us to deliver a transformative liberal arts education.”

SLU says a recent survey (with near 80 percent response rate) by their career services department “reported that 2015 St. Lawrence graduates experienced a 97 percent placement rate in either a job or graduate school less than one year after graduation. Of the survey respondents, 78 percent were pursuing a career, and 19 percent were attending graduate school. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the nationwide career outcome rate for 2015 graduates was 82 percent, and for institutions comparable in size to St. Lawrence was 90.3 percent.

“Nearly 97 percent of all of St. Lawrence University undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid, which may include any combination of gift aid, federal grants and loans, and on-campus employment,” said Melissa Farmer Richards, vice president for University Communications and acting executive Officer for Admissions. “Due to the wide availability of gift aid, St. Lawrence students enjoy a relatively low rate of borrowing – one that is below the reported national average.”
