POTSDAM – After less than six months in operation, optician Fred Cliff has closed St. Lawrence Optical, his Potsdam location at 11½ Maple St.
The Massena native, who had previously opened two optical shops in the area, opened the Potsdam store early last summer.
But now the shop, which had been renovated and filled with eyeglass frames and equipment, is locked and empty.
After Cliff graduated from Massena High School, he trained as an optician at Mater Dei College in Ogdensburg.
He opened Potsdam Optical, in Market Square Mall, in 1986, and sold it in 1998.
Cliff opened Canton Optical, on Riverside Drive, in 1990, and sold it in 1992.
Since then he had been in Ithaca and Syracuse, and then back in Potsdam, working at optical outlet chain stores.
Attempts to reach Cliff for comment were unsuccessful.
