St. Lawrence NYSARC, (www.slnysarc.org,) is a private, non-profit organization committed to maximizing the potential of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In 2013, the agency began the process of increasing their public profile to highlight the innovative programs currently available. St. Lawrence NYSARC added services for people by providing unique options through programs such as Children and Youth, Transitions and Freedom Reins.

“We can’t allow budget cuts and a flat economy to prevent us from creating new opportunities for people with developmental disabilities,” said Daphne Pickert, St. Lawrence NYSARC CEO/Executive Director. “Knowing this has led to three unique new programs.”

Children and Youth’s activities may take place in both the home and community settings and occur during the weekends, evenings and summer. The professional services offered are based on Applied Behavior Analysis, overseen by a licensed clinician. Nearly 100 children ages five to 18 build self-confidence through interactive, life-skills training.

The Transitions program is designed to empower teens and young adults with disabilities to achieve their goals through independent living and civic engagement. Transitions currently serves 30 people in the Canton area and is planning to expand to Potsdam in the coming year, opening space for another 30 people.

In 2014, the new Freedom Reins service will work towards building a permanent home in Fine at the Dodge Pond site. Under the leadership of an instructor certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, this ground-breaking equine program supports hands-on experience for individuals with disabilities with horse care. In time, many people will choose to learn riding skills, as well.

Since beginning in 1959, St. Lawrence NYSARC has grown to serve more than 750 people at 32 locations in St. Lawrence County.

St. Lawrence NYSARC employs 590 staff members, managed by CEO/Executive Director, Daphne Pickert. The parent-driven Board of Directors is led by President, Patricia Campanella.
