St. Lawrence County’s January unemployment rate went down compared to the same month last year, and the county gained a few hundred jobs over that time period.
The state Department of Labor says the January rate was 8.1 percent, down from 8.3 percent in January 2017. There were 3,500 people on the dole at the beginning of this year, and 3,600 at the beginning of 2017. There were 40,300 people employed in St. Lawrence County in January, up from 39,800 the same month last year, DOL said.
To the east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate went up to 7.3 percent in January from 7 percent in January 2017. There were 1,500 people on benefits at the start of this year and 1,400 at the beginning of the previous year. There were 18,700 people employed in the county in January and 18,600 in January 2017, DOL said.
To the west in Jefferson County, the jobless rate went up slightly to 8.4 percent in January from 8.3 percent in January 2017. There were 3,800 people on unemployment in the first month of this year and 3,700 the same time last year. There were 41,400 people working in the county in January and 41,000 in January 2017, DOL said.
