St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate remained flat in May compared to the same month last year, but there were fewer people working, according to the state Department of Labor.
The DOL says there was a 6 percent unemployment rate last month and also in May 2016, with 2,600 people receiving unemployment benefits in each instance.
At the same time, there were 40,000 people working last month and 40,900 in May 2016, DOL said.
To the east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate went up about 10 percent, with 1,100 people working last month and 1,000 people in May 2016. That translates to respective unemployment rates of 5.6 and 5.1 percent, DOL said.
To the west in Jefferson County, the rate also went up less than 10 percent. There were 2,600 people working last month and 2,400 in May 2016. The respective unemployment rates were 5.7 and 5.3 percent, DOL said.
