St. Lawrence County unemployment rate increases

St. Lawrence County unemployment rate jumped to 9.3 percent in November as unemployment throughout the North Country increased.

The rate had stood at 9.0 percent in October and 10.3 percent one year ago, according to the state Labor Department.

The total number of people employed in the county dropped to 43,600, compared to 44,200 in October and 43,700 a year ago. The number of unemployed residents in the county rose to 4,500 last month, a 100-person increase from October and but 500 less than one year ago.

In nearby Franklin County to the east, the unemployment rate also increased significantly, to 8.4 percent in November from 7.8 percent in October and 9.0 percent one year ago.

To the west, in Jefferson County, the November unemployment rate increased to 9.4 percent in November, compared to 8.7 percent in October and 10.0 percent in November 2010, labor department officials said.
