St. Lawrence County's unemployment rate dropped by one-half of one percent in March from February.

The percentage of county residents receiving unemployment insurance in March was 9.2 percent, compared to 9.7 percent for February, according to the state Department of Labor.

The March number represents a 1-percent decrease from a year ago, the DOL said, when the rate was 10.2 percent.

There were 43,700 St. Lawrence County residents employed in March versus 4,500 unemployed, according to the DOL.

A year ago, the respective numbers were 43,700 and 5,000.

DOL statistics show that all counties outside of major labor areas in February 2014 have seen, on average, their unemployment rate drop by 1.2 percent from their numbers for the same month last year.

To our east in Franklin County, the DOL says the unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent in March 2014 from 10.2 percent in March 2013.

To our west in Jefferson County, the DOL says the unemployment rate dropped to 10.1 percent in March 2014 from 11.1 percent in March 2013.
