Although St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate fell a full percentage point in August from the same month last year, it continues to have one of the highest unemployment rates in New York.
The rate in August was 6.5 percent, down from 7.5 percent in August 2014. There were 42,400 people working and 2,900 people on the dole. That compares to 42,100 people working and 3,400 people getting benefits last year, the state Department of Labor said.
There are only four counties in the state with a rate at or above 6 percent, with the other three being Oswego, Montgomery and Bronx counties.
To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate dropped .7 percent to 5.7 percent last month from 6.4 percent in August 2014.
There were 19,300 people employed last month and 1,200 receiving unemployment benefits. In August 2014, 19,500 people were working and 1,300 were on the dole, according to the DOL.
To our west in Jefferson County, The rate fell by .7 percent. It stood at 5.7 percent last month and 6.4 percent in August a year ago.
There were 44,700 people working in August and 2.7 percent on unemployment. In August 2014, 44,900 people had jobs and 3.1 percent received benefits, the DOL said.
The numbers reported are not seasonally adjusted, according to the DOL.
