St. Lawrence County unemployment rate at 6.7 percent in March, one whole point below a year ago

St. Lawrence County unemployment rate at 6.7 percent in March, one whole below March 2015 rate.

St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate dropped a full percentage point in March from the same month last year, but remains higher than the state and national averages.

In St. Lawrence County in March, the rate was 6.7 percent, below the 7.7 rate in March 2015, according to the state Department of Labor.

There were 3,200 people on the dole last month compared to 3,700 in March 2015. There were 44,800 people employed last month, compared to 44,000 the same month last year.

The New York state unemployment rate in March was 5.2 percent, down from 5.7 percent in March 2015, according to the DOL.

Nationwide, the jobless rate was 5.1 percent in March, down from 5.6 percent the same month last year, DOL said.

To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent last month from 7.5 percent in March 2015.

There were 1,300 people receiving benefits in Franklin County last month and 1,500 the same month last year. There were 19,400 people employed in March and 18,900 in March 2015, according to the DOL.

To our west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate was 7.3 percent last month and 8.4 percent in March 2015.

There were 3,400 people on the dole last month and 3,800 in March 2015. The county had 43,300 people employed in March and 41,800 working the same month last year, DOL said.
