St. Lawrence County tourism generated $106 million in 2010, a 4.4% increase, report says

Tourism in St. Lawrence County generated $106 million 2010, an increase of $5 million, or 4.4 percent, from 2009, according to a recently released reported.

And tourism activity generated more than $6.6 million in local tax dollars during 2010, an increase of $1.1 million, or about 1 percent, over 2009, the report says.

The figures, from a New York State report on tourism and its economic impact, were revealed at the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner last week.

“This is encouraging news for all of us involved in bringing people – and their wallets – to St. Lawrence County, “ Chamber Executive Director Pat McKeown said. “Credit should by no means be limited to the county Chamber – these numbers are the result of hard work by our local chambers of commerce across the county.

In addition to the tourism figures, the following figures for 2011 to date were also noted at the meeting:

• 548: number of chamber members; 165 member companies with 239 employees subscribe to their health care benefits.

• 830: number of mail or phone inquiries chamber has handled so far this year; 2,229 pieces of information literature sent to every state in the union, 12 countries.

• 11,600 St. Lawrence County Travel Guides distributed this year.

• $393,000: amount pledged to the chamber’s FISHCAP initiative.

• 4,000: number attending the 2010 Craft, Food & Wine Show at Cheel Arena.

• 4,001: number anticipated at this year’s craft show, Dec. 9 and 10.

• Zero: Number of available booths for crafts show, totally booked.

• $498,990: total amount of USDA grant funds available from the chamber to start-up or expanding businesses.

• 22: Number of loans made from repayments.

• 25,346 pounds of carp – 12.6 tons – caught and released in five days of fishing during the 2011 Carp Angling World Championship.

• 1,821 pounds of carp - .91 tons - caught and released in two days of fishing during the 9th Annual St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament.

• 15: Number of countries represented in the 2011 World Carp Tournament.

• 40 lbs. 8 oz: Largest carp caught during Junior Tournament by 13-year-old Tyler Mitchell, Hogansburg, first-time angler.

• 39 lbs, 15 oz: Largest carp caught during World Tournament by Pavel Hastik, Czech Republic, veteran angler.

• 17/287: number in this year’s St. Lawrence Leadership Institute class and alumni.

• 500/43: Number of people who paid $5 for an evening of networking fun at the “Business in the Spotlights” chamber events and number of businesses spotlighted.

• 27: Number of times McKeown has given her FISHCAP speech to public groups and corporations.
