GOUVERNEUR -- St. Lawrence County legislators oppose the closure of Kinney Nursing Home, according to a resolution passed by the finance committee Monday.
The former Gouverneur Hospital filed a closure plan with the New York State Department of Health for the Kinney Nursing Home in December 2013, according to the resolution.
“The Town and Village of Gouverneur and surrounding communities will experience a tremendous hardship if the facility closes as it will require loved ones to travel a greater distance which could create an unmanageable commute,” the resolution said.
Legislators said Kinney Nursing Home has been certified to provide care since 1971 and while there have been economic impacts to the Gouverneur area, it is imperative that nursing care remain available in the area.
“The Board of Legislators strongly opposes the closure of the Kinney Nursing Home in Gouverneur and request the New York State Department of Health provide an update on the statue of the closure plan,” the resolution says.
Legislators also requested options be made available to keep the Gouverneur facility operational and a viable entity in the community.
The legislation will be forwarded to State and U.S. representatives as well as the health commissioner.
