Although St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate fell significantly in June compared to a year ago, it has the second-highest jobless rate in the state.
The rate fell to 5.8 percent this June from 7.1 percent in June 2015, according to the state Department of Labor. There were 2,700 people on the dole last month and 3,300 in June last year. The number of people working remained flat at 43,300 both months.
The highest unemployment rate in New York for June was Bronx County at 7 percent, DOL said.
To our east in Franklin County, the rate was at 4.3 percent in June, compared to 6.3 percent in June 2015. There were 1,000 people receiving benefits last month and 1,300 the same month last year. The number of people working remained flat both months at 19,400.
To our west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent last month, down from 5.9 percent in June 2015. There were 2,400 people receiving benefits in June 2016 and 2,800 the same month last year. They gained 400 people working over that period, for a total of 45,900 in June 2016 and 45,500 in June last year.
