CANTON -- St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate dropped 0.1 percent in January over the previous year, but the area lost 700 jobs in the same time period, according preliminary data from the state Department of Labor.

That rate was 7.8 percent in January, down from 7.9 percent in January 2016. There were 3,300 people receiving benefits in January 2017 and 3,400 the same month last year.

That places St. Lawrence County with the third-highest unemployment rate in the state.

Despite fewer people receiving unemployment benefits, the county lost 700 jobs, with an estimated 39,400 last month and around 40,100 in January 2016, DOL said.

The difference in totals is due to rounding, according to the department of labor.
