St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate in December fell further than the state and national averages, according to the state Department of Labor.
There were 2,900 people in St. Lawrence County receiving unemployment benefits last month and 3,300 in December 2014, the DOL said. That means the unemployment rate fell to 6 percent from 7 percent.
There were 44,800 people working last month and 43,300 people working the same month last year, DOL said.
Across New York state, the rate fell .9 percent to 4.7 percent last month from 5.6 percent in December 2014. Nationwide, the rate fell to 4.8 percent from 5.4 percent in December 2014, DOL said.
To our east in Franklin County, the rate fell .8 percent. DOL reports 6.1 percent unemployment there last month and 6.9 percent the prior December. The number of people employed jumped from 18,600 to 18,900.
To our west in Jefferson County, the rate fell .7 percent, to 6.8 percent in December from 7.5 percent in December 2014. They had 42,600 people working last month and 41,600 the prior December.
