CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will recognize Cornerstone Services, Nature’s Storehouse and Kaneb Orchards.

The Business of the Year award recognizes “a business that has contributed to the growth of the St. Lawrence County economy and brings pride to the business community,” the chamber said. That is being awarded to Cornerstone Services. Established in 2005 in Norwood, the family-run business serves St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, dpecializing in plumbing and HVAC service and installation.

The company has since expanded to include commercial and geothermal installations. Their family of companies includes divisions dedicated to construction, property development and energy services in connection with NYSERDA. One nomination commended President/CEO DJ Colbert for “instilling his values in the business,” noting that “the company is honest, straight forward, hard working, caring and understanding of the North County community and business environment, which is why they have been as successful as they are,” according to the chamber.

The Customer Service Excellence award will recognize Nature’s Storehouse of Canton, a store providing foods and supplements, takeout, organic produce and hundreds of local goods. Opened in 1972, current owners Rainbow and Josh Crabtree have been operating the store since 2002, going from one to seven employees. A customer noted that they “love having a place to shop for healthy foods and personal input,” the chamber said. Another nomination expressed their love for “folks at Nature’s Storehouse” pointing out that “Not only do they know their stuff, they know me, and are always eager to help. It's truly a local gem!”

The Local Producer of the Year award goes to Kaneb Orchards of Massena. This award is for a chamber producer that “has developed their capacity for creating and selling a product that is handmade, locally sourced or value added, raising awareness and pride for local products,” the chamber said. Edward Kaneb Jr. and sister Elizabeth Kaneb started pressing fresh apple cider in 2009 from their family orchard. In 2013, they started producing their award-winning hard cider, which has won high accolades in competitions such as the New York State Fair, NY Wine & Grape Foundation, the Great Lakes Cider & Perry Competition, and most recently by Tasting.com in an international competition where they won gold, scoring higher than brands like Strongbow and Angry Orchard. Their product uses apples and cranberries from St. Lawrence County and is distributed in over 80 locations across the state. A customer noted that “the autumn season would not be complete without a trip to Kaneb Orchards to enjoy some of their wonderful apple cider and doughnuts,” the chamber said.

The chamber will officially honor the businesses at their Nov. 3 annual dinner. It will be held at SUNY Potsdam, beginning with a silent auction and cocktail hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, awards and a live auction. Reservations are required by Friday, Oct. 28: 315-386-4000.
