MASSENA -- The U.S. Senate on April 1 passed a bill to continue funding to hospitals that are considered low-volume through the same date next year.
The vote was 64-35, according to a news release from Sen. Charles Schumer’s office.
The release says Massena Memorial Hospital and Ogdensburg's Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center will benefit from the Senate's action.
According to the release, low-volume means the hospital is more than 15 road miles from another comparable hospital and has fewer than 1,600 Medicare discharges per year.
The House of Representatives approved the Sustainable Growth Rate bill, or so-called “Doc Fix” in late March. It is awaiting the president’s signature.
Without the funding, hospitals that treat a large number of Medicare patients would lose money, according to Schumer’s release.
