Seaway cargo up a bit this year led by 75 percent jump in grain shipments

Traffic on the St. Lawrence Seaway has seen an uptick from last year, led by a 75 percent increase in grain cargo.

The report from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation indicates that overall, traffic through August is up three percent over last year’s figures.

Recent news reports indicate that the huge increase in grain shipments could be due in part to backups on railroads with increasing crude oil transport in the U.S. and Canada that left a backlog in grain shipments from last year’s crops.

There has also been a large increase in general cargo – up 66 percent – while iron ore shipments are down 29 percent from a year ago.

Meanwhile ship transits are actually down a bit, from 2,123 through August last year to 2,115 this year.
