Radio Shack stores in Potsdam and Massena will be closing, but a franchise store in Canton is staying open.
As the Radio Shack chain of electronics stores undergoes bankruptcy, the company is closing more than 1,000 stores nationwide.
There reportedly are 'Store Closing' notices on their store in Potsdam, in the Price Chopper Plaza on Market Street.
The Massena store, in the Harte Haven Plaza, is also on the company’s list.
A franchise “store within the store” in Rex Hardware, in Canton’s University Plaza, is not affected by the closing announcements.
“They can’t close this store,” said Brenda Rexford, who own the hardware store with her husband.
She said their Radio Shack outlet is a franchise operation and is not included on the company’s closure list.
“We’ll always have an electronics department here at Rexford,” she said.
The Wall Street Journal reports the company is trimming its size and plans liquidation sales in 1,700 of its stores. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday.
Rexford said everyone in retail electronics from Best Buy on down is struggling, still adapting to online sales.
