POTSDAM -- Jeff Proulx says it’s been 15 years since he opened the Save-A-Lot on outer Market Street and it’s time to freshen up the space.

“We’ve done some upgrades during that time, but we need to do more, to make it more current,” Proulx said.

So he’s closing the Potsdam store for about two weeks later this month to give the store a thorough renewal.

It will be closed starting Sunday. April 12 through to reopening planned for Friday, April 24.

St. Lawrence County, Proulx owns and operates Save-A-Lot stores in Potsdam, Gouverneur and Ogdensburg, and a Canton store that opened last September in the University Plaza. He also owns four more in neighboring counties.

Aside from cosmetic changes like fresh paint and a new floor, he is upgrading equipment such as refrigerated cases and the “front-end system,” the cash registers and related equipment.

“It’s time to make it more current,” he said, with all the changes to credit cards and related payment systems. It will make it easier for the customers and provide “protection for us and the customers. And the scan rates will be better.”

Along with the new floor and all new shelving, there will be new brighter and more energy-efficient lighting, and in back, a new energy management system, in an effort to keep electric consumption and expense down.

He sounded almost apologetic when he explained that he will also be concentrating on “remerchandising,” a term he used to describe reorganizing by moving items from established places to new places in the store, which he regrets will cause some customers to have to search for the new locations of their favorites, but it will all be worth it.

“It will really have the appearance of a new store, fresh and bright,” Proulx said.
