POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Chamber is naming North Country This Week as their 2017 Business of the Year.

The weekly newspaper employs 20 people and every one is either a St. Lawrence County native or has lived here more than 20 years. An additional 10 people deliver the Canton-Potsdam paper each Tuesday.

North Country This Week, which operates NorthCountryNow.com, is a big supporter of many chambers of commerce in St. Lawrence County and is a member of the New York Press Association, which this spring presented the paper with awards for in-depth reporting and advertising layout and design.

One nomination referred to NCTW as “A business that is always there…always read…daily depended on in this community. They continue to publish special editions; Seniors, Outdoor/Garden, Bridal, Health to target their audience.”

North Country This Week was founded in 1984 in publisher Bill Shumway’s West Stockholm living room "with three goals that are still true today: produce an informative product readers rely on and appreciate; provide cost-effective advertising that helps maintain and increase sales; create jobs for the North Country,” the chamber said in a news release.

“North Country This Week’s employees deserve the credit for the success of the business and carrying out the paper’s commitment to the community. Each day, they design ads to help draw customers, make sure community events get publicized, report on both serious issues and positive news in St. Lawrence County, make sure the paper is delivered on time and update the website as many as nine times a day,” Shumway said in the release.

The award will be presented at the Potsdam Chamber’s spring lunch on May 11 at noon. It will be at the Potsdam Town & Country Club and is open to anyone to RSVP and attend. The cost of the buffet lunch is $25 per person and will include sandwiches and wraps, salads, soup, and dessert.

“The Potsdam Chamber will also recognize 10 member businesses celebrating a milestone anniversary and providing a chance for our newest members to introduce themselves,” said Potsdam Chamber Executive Director Marylee Ballou.

People can RSVP for the event by calling the chamber at 315-274-9000 or emailing potsdamchamber@slic.com.
