OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg is seeking engineering proposals for a property conditions assessment at the former Newell Building.
The engineering is the first step in a major rehabilitation project planned in a joint effort between Ogdensburg and St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency.
The 63,000-square-foot building once provided more than 100 jobs to the city and has caught the eye of many developers in recent years. But contamination at the site, unfortunate timing and degradation of utilities has made it tough for the city to close a deal.
However, the city was recently awarded a $1 million Restore New York grant, which will be used to bring the property back to a marketable condition.
That process will start with an engineering report, which will identify and prioritize needed repairs.
Once the engineers work is complete the city will then use the grant funding to rehabilitate the property. The engineering work will be funded with New York State Empire State Development grant funding.
