OGDENSBURG – Ogdensburg Mayor William Nelson and other members of the city council will attend an annual St. Lawrence County Conference of Mayors before renewing a franchise agreement with Time Warner Cable.

A brief public hearing regarding the agreement was held Monday, but drew no public comment.

Nelson said the meeting will allow him and other attendees to see other agreements municipalities have made with the company and determine what options might be best for city residents.

Nelson said renewing an agreement with Time Warner would not exclude the city from entertaining other providers.

He said major concern for the city is the possible sale of Time Warner to Comcast. Nelson said he was worried Ogdensburg might be considered “small potatoes” to the company, which may not see the area as a cost effective investment.

Nelson said he is also frustrated by the high price. He said he recently received a bill from the company that raised his rates and upon talking with a representatives he was offered an even more expensive package.

Councilor Brian Mitchell said he was concerned with news that Time Warner would again be raising rates by around 6 percent.

“The goal is, can we get better benefits for the community,” Nelson said.

The conference will take place in the Town of Massena in May.
