OGDENSBURG -- Hosmer's Marina will offer canoe and kayak rentals beginning Memorial Day weekend.
Bill Hosmer, a city council member, who opened the marina last summer, said the rentals were planned from the beginning, but he was waiting for the business to get in a "solid place" before making the investment.
Hosmer said paddlers have the option of launching the units at the marina in the St. Lawrence River, or launching in the Oswegatchie above the dam, which is about two blocks away.
"We'll transport it to the boat dock and they can call us when they return and we will pick them up," he said.
Rentals start as low as $10 for two hours and go up to $40 for 24 hours.
Hosmer said two kayaks and one canoe will be available from the start, but additional units will be added if there is interest from the public.
"We know that this kind of service is offered in St. Lawrence County in other areas, but no where in Ogdensburg is doing it," he said.
Hosmer said he is also in the process of installing a kitchen. He said he intends to offer a variety of sandwiches and wraps as well as bar menu.
"We are hoping to start serving food in June," he said.
Hosmer said he looks forward to expanding the business.
"It was always in my original plan and now that the building is done. We are doing it," he said.
Hosmer's Marina also operates a bar, bait shop and rental slips at the same location.
He said he has expanded to tackle shop to include more boating supplies such as sunscreen and life jackets.
The marina is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Bar hours are from noon to midnight.
