OGDENSBURG -- The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce is selling some unique gifts this holiday season.

Gifts available at the Chamber office include a set of four stone coasters depicting local landmarks (two bridges and two lighthouses); a new Images of America book, “Claxton Hepburn Memorial Hospital;” matted photos of Ogdensburg (historic and current) by Betty Steele; books by local authors Barbara Briggs Ward, Jim Reagen, Ronald Dale, Chris Rishe and Matt Curatolo; and David Martin’s “Ogdensburg.”

The Chamber office, at 1 Bridge Plaza, is also headquarters for Fort LaPresentation hats, shirts and books.

The featured item is the Chamber of Commerce’s Historic Collectable Ornament. This year, The Old Arsenal has been reproduced from pictures of the Arsenal when it was commissioned. It is available for $!8. Each ornament is individually gift boxed and is inscribed.

The Old Arsenal, located at 100 Lafayette St., was built in 1858 by New York State for use as an armory. General Schuyler F. Judd commanding the northern New York Militia was credited with getting the state to construct it during the administration of Governor John A. King.

The building originally housed cannons, muskets, sabers, and other paraphernalia of war. It was purchased by the City of Ogdensburg on Nov. 25, 1873 for $1,450 and sold in 1960 to Frank A. Augsbury, Jr. It now contains offices. Part of an old cannon remains on the North lawn.

Past ornament designs by Barlow Design include The Lighthouse, Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Remington Museum, NYS Armory, City Hall and the Ogdensburg Prescott International Bridge. A limited number of some of the other collectable ornaments are still available.

For more information, or to reserve your ornament, please call Sandy Porter at the Chamber office at 393-3620.
