OGDENSBURG -- The Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce will recognize James Fitzgerald, United Helpers Mosaic and the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund, at their Nov. 4 annual dinner.

Fitzgerald will be named Citizen of the Year. He has “dedicated his life to making Ogdensburg a better place,” the chamber said. He is member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, a board member the Ogdensburg SnackPack Program, an on-call member of Senior International that provides transportation for grocery shopping or medical appointments, and entertains at local nursing homes and various functions with his band, The Starlites.

The 2016 Business Improvement Award will go to United Helpers Mosaic for their purchase and renovation at 100 Ford Street to house the staff development offices, the Day Hab program, medical records and a board room.

“This has increased foot and vehicle traffic and increased revenue to the local area businesses,” a prepared statement from the chamber says.

UH Mosaic has also repurposed their space at 221 Hamilton Street into a Behavioral Health Clinic, adding a much needed service to the community and employing seven additional staff. Many Mosaic employees support the community through the local food pantry, Toys for Tots, local animal shelters and clothing drives. They also volunteer their services to help local organizations with improvement projects throughout the city, the chamber said.

The 2016 Outstanding Community Service Award will go to the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund, a volunteer, non-for-profit group who assists the financial needs of breast cancer patients during their treatment and recovery, or who are in the process of determining whether they are afflicted with breast cancer. They organize an annual walk to assist patients in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties. Their walk was formed in 2001 and has raised over half a million dollars. The money has assisted over 466 women with their recoveries aiding in transportation costs, insurance deductibles, co-pays, treatments or drugs that may not be covered by traditional insurance, and even help with immediate expenses like rent or mortgage, car payment, child care during treatments and utilities.

The awards will be given at their Nov. 4 annual dinner at the Gran View Restaurant. Cocktails will be at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40. Dinner choices are prime rib, chicken Marco Polo or broiled seafood platter. In addition to the awards ceremony, the evening will include a silent and live auction.
