OGDENSBURG --The Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce recognized several locals and businesses at their Friday annual dinner, where they also marked 60 years.

The Outstanding Community Service Award went to the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund. The group is a volunteer, non-for-profit group who assists the financial needs of breast cancer patients during their treatment and recovery, or who are in the process of determining whether they are afflicted with breast cancer. They organize an annual walk to assist patients in St. Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Their walk was formed in 2001 and has raised over half a million dollars. The money has assisted over 466 women with their recoveries aiding in transportation costs, insurance deductibles, co-pays, treatments or drugs that may not be covered by traditional insurance, and even help with immediate expenses like rent or mortgage, car payment, child care during treatments and utilities.

Business Improvement Award went to United Helpers Mosaic. They were recognized for their purchase and renovation at 100 Ford St. to house the staff development offices, the Day Hab program, medical records and a board room.

“This has increased foot and vehicle traffic and increased revenue to the local area businesses,” the chamber said last month.

UH Mosaic has also repurposed their space at 221 Hamilton Street into a Behavioral Health Clinic, adding a much needed service to the community and employing seven additional staff. Many Mosaic employees support the community through the local food pantry, Toys for Tots, local animal shelters and clothing drives. They also volunteer their services to help local organizations with improvement projects throughout the city, the chamber said.

James Fitzgerald was recognized as Citizen of the Year. He has “dedicated his life to making Ogdensburg a better place,” the chamber said. He is member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society, a board member the Ogdensburg SnackPack Program, an on-call member of Senior International that provides transportation for grocery shopping or medical appointments, and entertains at local nursing homes and various functions with his band, The Starlites.
