Two St. Lawrence County residents were charged March 16 in an underage drinking initiative check of 20 retail stores and establishments around the county, according to state police.

As part of the investigation, an underage volunteer was sent into each business in an attempt to have the clerk or bartender sell or serve the minor alcohol.

Two establishments sold to the underage operative. They were Norfolk Liquor, 72 S. Main St., Norfolk, and Gerry's Spirits, 1143 Patterson St., Ogdensburg.

Stacie L. Purves, 46, Norwood, was charged at 6:20 p.m. with prohibited sale of an alcoholic beverage and first-degree unlawful dealing with a child. Mary E. Deloney, 53, Ogdensburg, was charged at 8 p.m. at 1143 Patterson St. with the same offenses.

Both were released on appearance tickets returnable to court at a later date, officers said.
