MASSENA -- Nightengale Elementary recently upgraded the remainder of its classrooms by adding smart boards funded through an Alcoa Foundation grant, according to principal Amy Hornung.

“It’s been fantastic,” she said.

The grant gave $54,000 in two payments.

The half Nightengale received last year paid for smart boards and related equipment in most classrooms, Hornung said.

This year, they outfitted five rooms, upgraded some other smart boards that are about 10 years old and bought a 12-foot screen to use for assemblies. The money also improved their computer lab by adding Kindle e-book readers, tablets designed for use in educating children and added smart science scopes for other classrooms, according to Hornung.

Board of Education Trustee Kevin Peretta asked if they were looking at financial liability after the smart board’s lifespan.

Superintendent Patrick Brady said the IT department tracks that.

“Generally smart boards are about 10 years. They last a bit longer than computers,” Brady said.
