POTSDAM -- Canton-Potsdam Hospital has a new psychiatrist, Dr. Mariam H. Asar, who will begin seeing adult patients (18+ years of age) at 20 Cottage St., the former nursing home, on Monday, Aug. 15.

Asar completed her medical training at the Dow Medical College, Karachi University, Karachi, Pakistan. She competed her pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital, Albany Medical Center, Albany, and her adult psychiatry residency at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. She is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is board eligible for adult psychiatry. She has gained experience from around the world, having served in Great Britain, Pakistan, Scotland, and the United States.

Psychiatrists are general medicine physicians who have completed additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health diseases. These may range from clinical depression to schizophrenia, and can include learning disabilities, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance abuse diseases such as alcoholism. Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments for mental health disorders. These may include behavior modification, group and individual counseling, medication, or sometimes referral for surgery, depending on the type and stage of disease as well as the patient’s physical condition.

Asar’s research interests include psychoanalysis, cognitive behavior therapy, and hypnosis. She uses her spare time lobbying in support of the expansion of insurance coverage for children with psychiatric disorders.

She and her husband, Ramzan Ali, are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exercise and physical fitness, painting, and travel, especially to Manhattan to visit their son, Ehsan-Abbas Ali, a second-year student at Columbia Law School.
