CANTON -- New Day Doula Birth and Beyond has grown to include two doulas.

Rainbow L. Crabtree, formerly of Rainbow Crabtree Birth Doula, has joined Mary Michalek to form what they say is the only team-based doula agency serving St. Lawrence County.

“Working as a team allows us to give our clients the best service possible. They are guaranteed to know and feel comfortable with the doula who will be at their birth,” Michalek said in a prepared statement.

“We know that becoming a parent, whether it is for the first or fifth time, can be beautiful and powerful … but it can also be difficult and overwhelming. We provide non-biased support and help families sort birth-fact from birth-fiction,” Crabtree said in the release.

Doula support helps women and their partners to make choices with their birth experience and the first weeks of parenting.

“Studies show that women cared for during labor by a birth doula, compared to those receiving usual care, were 26 percent less likely to give birth by cesarean section, 41 percent less likely to give birth with a vacuum extractor, 28 percent less likely to use pain medication, and 33 percent less likely to be dissatisfied or negatively rate their birth experience,” Crabtree claims in the statement, giving no attribution for the statistics.

In addition, women who receive postpartum doula support have access to breastfeeding support and the help they need to heal from the rigors of giving birth and being sleep-deprived, Crabtree says.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stated in its 2014 Obstetric Care Consensus that, “one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula. A Cochrane meta-analysis of 12 trials and more than 15,000 women demonstrated that the presence of continuous one-on-one support during labor and delivery was associated with improved patient satisfaction and a statistically significant reduction in the rate of cesarean delivery (111). Given that there are no associated measurable harms, this resource is probably underutilized,” according to the release.

New Day Doula offers birth doula, postpartum doula, and lactation support services. They work with families in St. Lawrence County and the surrounding Northern New York areas.
