POTSDAM – Geeks Who Drink, a group that has set up live pub trivia quizzes at over 90 bars and restaurants around the country, makes its New York debut Oct. 20 at the Cactus Grill and Cantina, 11 Raymond St.

Geeks Who Drink say their goal is “to foster friendly cerebral competition and promote social drinking (and eating) in a relaxed environment.”

The categories and questions are intended to be entertaining (“Hunting, Fishing and Drinking: The Three Dude Groups”; “Wildly Inappropriate First Date Movies (think The Accused”), so that even the losers will have a chance at a laugh or two.

The program, operating in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Virginia, says it has more than 20 question writers and team of research librarians to check every question and answer.

They have a web site, www.geekswhodrink.com, where photos of winning teams, scores, and narrative of the contests’ proceedings are posted the next day.

It’s free to play. The contest is eight rounds of eight questions, played by teams of up to six players. Winners get “bar cash, Internet fame, and prizes,” they say.

The company has been advertising for “quizmasters” to act as hosts to run the contests, who will be paid $50 per night plus a $25 bar tab, – “experience preferred,” the ad says.
